Hey, why is this movie s'posed to be so realistic?? If the SPR characters were CM sprites, they'd never have made it off the beach! Even with a Close Combat-esque pseudo-understanding of infantry tactics, I was able to discern a whole mess of bad old Hollywood military misinformation:
1) how did Tom Hanks' lil' detachment ever get the goods on the German MG nest? We had fat Sarge Horvath, Jewish Fish, and bozo Caparzo (is this "Goonies 2?") firing single shot rifles for covering fire, while sniper Ross Perot outruns the Kraut MG!! WTF?!?!
2) BS male bonding brotherhood of wargaming dialogue BEHIND ENEMY LINES ACROSS AN OPEN FIELD IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! Was retired USMC Capt. Dale Dye of "Platoon" fame really a "military adviser" to this flic???
3) How the hell did the half sqaud of like seven men successfully charge yet another MG nest, across an open field??? Damn, talk about artistic license!
4) Why in Namen des Fuehrers did 'em Krauts go into town armor first, and continue to lead with their tanks after getting a Tiger put outta commish???
5) How was Ross Perot able to fire off so many shots from his bell-tower perch with a bolt-action rifle??
6) How come ain't nobody pissed in they pants?!
And why the hell can't the Germans shoot sh!t, even when the Joes are right in front of 'em!
Did anyone else feel queasy about Spiel-(you know what that means in Yiddish, right?)-berg claiming, upon receipt of the Navy's or DoD's highest civilian honor, "that [he feels] that [he's] served [his] country in [his] own way?"
Bleh. =P
Seriously, I was disappointed with this one. I thought th melodrama in "Cross of Iron" more realistic, believe it or not.
And what's with that guy in "Patton" doing a right face with his lead foot (i.e., right) "coming in" instead of his left, trailing fot, being "brought in"?!?! You know, in that sce where Bloody Guts addressed his assembled peons for a non-apology for bitch-slapping a soldier. That guy who does a right face in the lower right-hand corner of that scene (letterboxed/anamorphic) does it wrong! Or was that how they used to do it, like how Army phonetic alphabetty has changed??????
