Don't know much about it yet, but it's setting is the battle of Stalingrad and aspires to be the most expensive movie made to date.
It's reported release date is sometime in February of the new year.

Hmmmmm...
I had heard the name, but had no idea what it was actually about.
Guess I've been too busy waiting for the Hanks/Spielberg HBO series.

BAND OF BROTHERS, based on the book of the same name, about EASY Company throughout the war.
It will be 10 episodes long, with a decent budget, last I heard.

I heard today that Spielberg was given an honorary knighthood. He's entitled to put the letters KCB after his name now, but no "Sir" Stephen since he's American. Can't think why the Queen would want to honor him though. Anybody have an idea?

A Band of Brothers
A 10-Part mini-series probably starting next September. Was supposed to start next month, but they just finished filming Nov. 24th. They are in editing now.

Spielberg was knighted for his contributions to movies over there.
Doesn't make LOTS o' sense to me either...
BUT, good for him.
Spielberg's Knighthood - I believe he was given it for his contributions to the British Film Industry.

the movie is directed by a french guy
the story located in stalingrad is based about the real history of a russian sniper ace and his mortal duel with a german master sniper (actor Ed Harris) promptly bring to the front to eliminate this russian soldier

Yah, they've already got a poster up for it at the local Mega-Movie-Plex: Shows a Russian (?) soldier holding a rifle standing in a street surrounded by demolished buildings.
Could this be the Euro rebuttal to SPR? I just hope it's half-way decent...

As long as the battle scenes are somewhat realistic, and they dont dress up M1 Abrahms tanks as Tigers or T-32s, I will be fine with it.
Oh yeah, no cornball drama thrown in either...I hate that. If this movie plays out anything like "The English Patient", I will be very hurt and angry.......

"Enemy at the Gates" is one hell of a book. Probably one of the best war history/eyewitness accounts I have read. Very engrossing. I didn't even know that a movie was in the works. I hope they make some attempt at historical accuracy. I am sick and tired of seeing 'German' tanks that are really nothing more than old Patton tanks with an iron cross on the side. I wonder how the movie industry is going to bastardize the book though (a la Starship Troopers). The thing is is that the sniper duel was but a Very small part of the book's story. I'd rather see the battles at the Barrikady, Red October tractor factory, Univermag, Commissar's House, etc etc etc

Ha that's pretty funny! There were no "T32s" or Tigers at Stalingrad anyway. Sounds like you wouldn't be able to detect historical accuracy even if there was some.

At least they're doing this whole thing by merit. The Queen did NOTHING to get her status.

Is this Russian Sniper movie being filmed in the USSR, or in the USA?

Is there a website they have this some where, maybe a preview or something. Sound really intersting and like most said:
I hope it's historicly accurate!!! I am tired of M24 chaffes being Shermans and M-48's being Tigers.
Thanx for the info.

The USSR ceased to exist many years ago.
Enemy At The Gates is being filmed somewhere in Germany. There is an epic river crossing a la SPR near the start of the film.
Hopefully this new movie will be an improvement on 'Stalingrad', which was filmed as a Television series, and then cut down for the cinematic version.

What's this? Another dagger in my back? Oh well, I never laid any claim at being highly schooled on historical OOB's and such anyways.
Thanks for that...
Here stand still I'll pull the dagger out. As I said it was all in jest. Just couldn't let the irony pass unnoticed.

Perhaps you could take this opportunity to tell us "beer & pretzel" type players what kind of AFV's were common in Stalingrad, and the surrounding area.

I'm glad to hear about a new East Front movie. I think, the german Stalingrad movie was a quite good, it was accurate historically. There were not too much AFVs in it, but they were correct. For example the SdKfzs were panzer-gray, not sand-yellow, the germans used Opel Blitz trucks, not GMCs, and the Ju52 was also cool. If the "Enemy At The Gates" will be somewhere between Stalingrad and SPR, I'll be very happy. Ed Harris will be cool as a german sniper. Does anyone know, who's the french guy who will direct the movie? Maybe Luc Besson? (The Jeanne Dark was a great movie, did you watched it?)

Too bad that duel never happend.
Here is what Anthony Beevor (author of Stalingrad) had to say:
"Indeed, the whole story of the sniper duel is fiction. There is absolutely no trace in
the German military archives or SS records of SS officer Heinz Thorwald.
Also there is absolutely no report of the duel in the Red Army files which concentrated
on sniper activities (the daily reports of the Political Department of Stalingrad Front to Moscow)
This great story can be classified as Sovjet propaganda."
The quote below is from a BBC News article:
"Mr Beevor, whose acclaimed tome Stalingrad is rapidly becoming the definitive text on the battle, said while Zaitsev was a real figure there was no evidence to support the existence of Koenig.
He said: 'I've been through the Soviet Ministry of Defence's archive in Podolsk and there is no record of such a duel.'
'If it had taken place the Soviet propaganda machine would have leapt on it.'"

I just finished the Beevor book. Very good read. Happened to read it during a recent cold snap in my area which really helped with the immersion! http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/smile.gif Gave me a small but real sense of the hardships of the weather. Brrrr! BTW I also read a book that may be the basis of the Ed Harris movie. I think it was called Rattenkrieg. It is a fictionalized account of the alledged sniper duel between Torwald and Zaitsev. An ok read but I had some problems with it, I can't put my finger on why though. It just rang false in some ways. Well I will have to see this movie anyway. I've liked Harris in some of his stuff. I liked him as the mercenary in a movie about the troubles in central america during the 80's. Don't remember the name though. I think Nick Nolte was in it too.
Wow that got long... http://www.battlefront.com/discuss/smile.gif

The real Vasiliy , the sniper from Enemy at the Gate upcoming movie , had a "record" of 400 kills !! ( around 200 only during the siege of Stalingrad ! )
If someone is interested to read more about him ( and have a look at a photo of the real Vasiliy Zaitsev )or to read more about Red Army Snipers , visit this site ( This Site is a good link for information on Stalingrad Battle )

Um, Crockett, you can stop posting now. We get it.
As to "sniper battles".... Well, it's a bit silly when you think about it. Snipers don't take objectives or defend them.
And anyway, there are no snipers in CM. Only "sharp shooters". Big difference.

I just saw a trailor of Enemy at the Gates a few days ago while going to see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. They didn't show many battle scenes other than one where the scene freezes every time a soldier gets shot...guess they did that to be dramatic. That and one brief glimpse of a group of German bombers(Junkers?) flying over the rubbles.
