An American might call someone, 'a yellow stinking coward' and a Brits might say, a 'bloody windy bastard', what would a German say?

"Feige Sau!" , "Verfluchter Idiot/Feigling/...!"
There are a lot of combinations, but adjectives and adverbs align/adapt to its objects or subjects.

Good but a term a German would use for another German suffering from a lack of courage would be best - unless its up there already....

"Feigling" = "coward"
"elend" increases it in this context. So mike8g is absolutely correct.
