Ongoing PBEM game and patching

I am in the middle of a PBEM game and I need to know whether both of us need to patch to 1.3 to continue or if only one of us has patched can we still play?

You can actually both play with the different versions but there will arise a difference in consistency.

If for example you are playing with patch v1.03 then your turns may play out slightly differently wrt the recent changes to the executable, i.e. the sub spotting fix, common air support between friendly air units etc. This is why it is suggested that you either both upgrade to the latest patch or finish off the game with v1.02 before upgrading.
