Hi There:
I just dowloaded and installed SC2. I appeared to instal normaly except the game did not launch after clicking finish.
When I try to run the game I get:
SC2.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005) Click on OK to terminate the application.
I installed the game on a 2week old Alienware with only one other game installed. My system specs are:

A (0xc0000005) type error is traditionally caused by a faulty install (or corrupt file) in DirectX. I would recommend reinstalling that first then seeing what happens. You can get the latest version right from Microsoft here:

Reinstalled Direct X and even updated it with the link in Gen Markys thread, which was released on April 6, 2006. But I still get the same error. The error always pops up twice if that is any help.

Just guessing here but perhaps the original download was corrupted... I would suggest (if possible) to re-attempt the download and see if that makes a difference. Alternatively you could try the download (burned to CD etc.) on another computer to confirm if the download is Ok and/or if it is in fact your originally installed computer with the issue.
You could also try installing all the latest drivers for your system, sound, video etc., just to eliminate these possibilities as well.

Uninstalled the game.
Re-downloaded the game (much easier today)
Installed the new download.
Same exact problem.
Updated driver for Creative SB X-FI
Same exact error.
My duel nvida 7900GT video cards have latest driver 84.21
Not sure what to try next.

Sorry to hear about the continued trouble but unfortunately something still sounds corrupt. Do you have the possibility to try this on a second computer just to make confirm that at least the downloaded file is working correctly?

Ok I made a little room on the hard drive of my 5 year old Dell PC and shared the same download to it and installed.
It ran with no error.
So there must be a conflict with the newer hardware as everything on my Dell is much older technology then my new Alienware.

Ok, well glad to hear at least that you were able to get it running

Hi guys, I too am now faced with exactly the same error message. Only its appearing on both my PC`s..have re-downloaded the game file, resinstalled directx 9.c etc, and no joy so far.
Thats 2 instances of this particular problem, i need company, misery needs company, has this happened to anyone else out there, and if so, how did you resolve it without using an olde-spec PC? here`s hoping..

Forgot to mention, the demo worked great! What could the differences be between the demo start and full game start do you think guys?

@Wesreidau: I never tried the demo so I can not comment on that. But I am curious what video card(s) you are useing?

Guess I'll add my name to the list of people getting the error. I'm on Nvidia GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 adapter. Uninstalled, wiped the files/folder left over from the C drive, redownloaded, reinstalled and same error. Happens when running a scenerio after the first few moves. Reboots the whole system! I did install every directX patch that MS had too.
Weird thing is is that it worked just fine Thursday and Friday morning. Friday afternoon it went south on me.

Been waiting for this release for a long time, extremely long face here at the moment....I`m hoping a work around comes up, or that in 2-3 weeks the CD version works ok..

Last update of the day, tried the game on my old retired PIII laptop with a really rubbish spec. and the game works great!
The key to this error is buy an old computer, DO NOT UPGRADE whatever you do :)
Seriously, I`d really like to know how to get this great game working on my gaming rigs...pls update us as and when, thanks in advance

Okay, try this:
1. Right-click on "My Computer"
2. Select "Properties"
3. Click on the "Advanced" Tab.
4. Click on the Performance "Settings" Button
5. Click on the "Data Execution Prevention" Tab
6. Verify that "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" is selected. If's not, select that option and then try and run the game. If the crash persistes, go back and select the other option "turn on DEP for all windows programs and services EXCEPT those I select" and ADD SC2.exe and Editor.exe as an excluded applications. Reboot and then try and see if it continues to crash.

I checked my DEP and it was already turned on so I did the next option and added those exceptions. I don't have time to play a full game but I tried a scenerio that had crashed and it went further then it had before with NO crash!! So far so good! smile.gif

Thanks Madmatt!
Chageing DEP to 'Windows programs and services only' was the cure.
Excellent job tracking that down as I would have never figured that one out on my own.
Game looks and sounds much better on my newer rig.
Thanks again
