Okay, here is the Cheery Waffle rule for sodding:

"Green side up!"

Since Axe filled up the last thread with pictures of cars, it was time to move on.

Hey guys, a friend of mine has created a awesome web strategy game called Fiefdom. Basically, you log in, create a fiefdom, then grow it into the most powerful fiefdom around, crushing your rivals and looting their towns.

It's incredibly addictive. He's still beta'ing it, but said he'd be happy to have more good players come try it out. I don't know any, so I'm inviting you guys instead.

http://www.evolvingworlds.com/fiefdom

If enough of you dolts try it, we can make our own Waffle Alliance. smile.gif

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate Boo? No? I hate Boo. I haven't lost this many tanks since the debacle against Nugget.

My forces got a sound contact against Axe, but since the dust cloud is coming down the road, and the sound contact is going through the woods, I'm going to go with the.....sound contact!

Well, the festive season is well and truly a dim, distant memory :(

Still, if any of you maggots want to indulge in a little post-dated seasonal tomfoolery we could always drop by the Peng thread with a few wisecracks about being lesbians trapped in men's bodies

Turns out later tonight. Possibly.

Teddy

PS I can't believe none of you guys want to help out with the nice request for a CMBB manual pdf.

Chalk it up to your abysmal battle tactics. Tactics like, "I think I'll move my tanks up on slight rises, right out in the open. That'll show him!"

KittySince I don't usually read that quaint little collection of mindless posts which goes by the name of the penguin thread, can you define how you meant "plugging" for me? Do you mean you put in a good word for the Cheery Waffles? Do you mean you stopped up our thread, like a clogged drain? Or do you mean it the way the cowboys in old westerns used it, meaning you shot our thread? ;) :D

Oh, and nobody has called me a "little" anything for a long, long time, so I'll take that as a compliment. :D

Hey Maggots -- glad to see a lot of you signed up. I'm going to form an alliance for us in a bit (probably around 8EST or so).

Sorry I haven't been around this afternoon, spend your early rounds building your fiefdoms. smile.gif

There's not been much chatter in the game today because one alliance had half the players in it. =P It's being split up now, though.

There's a slight issue with the program in that you need to login using your advisor's name, and then your password.

I have a new scenario ready for playing - Bidberg Heights. Total 5,000 points on an 880m x 800m map (approx) and 24 turns. It's jolly good fun. Any takers for a quick test before I release it to The Scenario Depot?

1) The file you sent said it was for 'A Different Version' - so I asked you to remake the turn and resend it since there is some funny corruptication.

Just completed another game on Abbott's Road to Moscow. I played the Soviets this time, and smashed my German opponent. I only wish the later T-34s were as deadly as the 1940 model!

I don't know if any of you get History International, but if you do, be sure and check out History Viewpoint's presentation of "Blood Upon the Snow: Russia's War" -- it's 12 or so 1 hour episodes on the East Front, beginning with Stalin's assumption of power (I never knew that Lenin recommended that Stalin not succeed him) going through the end of the war. I've got a TiVo wish list that picks up each of them (if you have TiVo, I can give you my wish list specifics -- you probably don't want a season pass b/c the rest of the History Viewpoint series aren't as good). The footage in this show is incredible.

They've also got a three parter on the SS running; TiVo grabbed one about the Waffen-SS for me.

By the way, how do you take a screenshot?

How come there's no blood in this game?

Why are there only three soldiers pictured in a squad?

Why doesn't someone mod the bazooka/flamethrower/mortar/ampulomet/piat?

Why aren't there SS insignia on the German version?

What are mods and where can I get them?

Can someone e-mail me the manual?

I love my job.

Yesterday I wrote a story about a local veteran, Charles Hancock, who is the first in our area to get the new "veteran" licence plate with the symbol of the poppy on it.
He joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment — a militia unit — in 1940. However after a couple of years he switched to the Air Force.
He trained to be a wireless airgunner but washed out because of difficulty in mastering the wireless part. He then found himself in Angus at Canadian Forces Base Borden training to be a transport driver for the Air Force.
He took a three-week training course in mobile transport outside of Moose Jaw and asked for the first overseas posting he could get. Soon he was off to Scotland in January of 1944.
Hancock was attached to 129 of the Royal Air Force and trained in several places in southern England before crossing the English Channel in an American landing craft shortly after D-Day.
In his time in Europe he helped supply the air force as it moved through Normandy, into Belgium and Holland. A serious bout of tuberculosis put him in hospital in England. He was shipped back on the hospital ship T.S. Letitia, where his berth mate — an airman who had his eyelids, nose and ears burned off in a crash — taught him to play crib.
Once home Hancock went on to a 27-year long career in the RCAF.
Highlights of his career included driving Queen Elizabeth around while she was in Canada in 1959.

So I get back to the office and type "TSS Letitia" into google and come up with the ship's history and a color painting of it. I printed the two things out and dropped them off to him about 15 minutes ago. He looked at the painting for a long time without saying anything then looked at me and, with tears in his eyes, said "Until right now I'd never seen the ship that brought me home."
He was brought onboard on a stretcher and taken off on a stretcher and never really got a look at the ship from the outside.

Like I said, I love my job.

Huh. So I'm looking at today's car on my calendar, a 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 SC, and there's this airplane behind it.
It's a nice Soviet red with yellow lettering stenciled on it. Using my trusty magnifying glass I can make it out — "Yak 9U — Barbarossa — Eddie Andreini."

Google turns this up.

Eddie Andreini has been a part of the West Coast airshow circuit for more than 35 years.

He learned to fly in a Taylorcraft L-2 at the age of 16 and broke into the airshow business flying a BT-13 at the Watsonville Airshow in 1964. Since then, he has flown a Great Lakes, deHavilland Chipmunk, PT-17 and his current mounts: an all-red Yak-9 named "Barbarossa" and a 450-hp Super Stearman he flies solo and with a wingwalker.

When he's not flying, Andreini runs a heavy equipment and engineering firm in Half Moon Bay, a seaside community south of San Francisco.

Although he was bitten by the Yak bug years ago after a season of flying a Yak-52, it wasn't until 1996 that he got his new Yak-9U from Russia via Jim Wickersham of Shadetree Aviation in Carson City, Nev.

After installing a liquid-cooled Allison V-12 and a modified prop from a DC-3, Andreini made the first flight in his Yak in February '97. After working out a few bugs, he explored the Yak's performance envelope.

It went fast, even at low power settings; and although it liked to roll, it didn't like high G loads, so loops had to be 3,000-footers. In a few weeks, though, Andreini had worked out a 10-minute aerobatic sequence for his first airshow.

The rest, as they say, is history. He now splits his performances between the Stearman and the Yak, depending on what the crowd wants to see.

For more information about Eddie Andreini Airshows, contact Power Entertainment at (650) 726-2065 or e-mail: readyeddy@aol.com.

Well, thanks for the kind words all, but Paula turned down the job. It was a great facility (http://www.victoriavillage.ca/) but they are under a provincially-mandated budget and could only offer $7,000 less than what she is making now. :( With a new house, it was a bigger hit in the wallet than we could take right now.

As usual, she saw the positive (she was offered the job, after all). As for me, I just saw more commuting for her. She works very hard so the two of us can enjoy what we have and I am so proud of her every day.

To top it off, I had to shovel 30 centimetres of snow from not only my driveway but my parents' since they are in Mexico right now.  The forecast for tonight? —36C with the windchill.

Turns and my long-promised, never-delivered update tonight. I feel like Pete Rose.

Becket, I like Fiefdom, but I don't think the system should be so open-ended. It seems to me that once a fief reaches a certain population there need to be negative consequences from increasing population pressure. As it stands now a few experienced early-joiner players can form an alliance and keep everyone else from ever having any chance to catch them in the rankings. Actually, I was thinking about what a wonderful model of gang wars that Fiefdom provides.

Oh, behave.

Okay, how's this for an unsatisfying turn:

Picture a long, narrow street in a small Italian town. The music from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" starts to play. A Tiger rolls down one end of the street. Three Shermans roll down the other end. They aim their guns, and

End of Turn.

ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHH! Axe hurry up with the next turn (if only so I can watch all my Shermans brew up)!

Hello my dear collegues!

Some statistics for your enjoyment and edification:

****************************************
First to Reach Archduke and live in a Palace: Fey
Honorable Mention Archduke in Castle: Angus Thorn

Top 5 Fiefdom Scores: Marquis Warpig's Badlands, Marquis Boots's Badlands, Viscount Kronos's Woods, Count Zeebat's Tundra, Viscount Audixy's Delta.

Top 3 Unallianced Fiefdoms: Viscountess Solitaire's Glen, Nightwolf's Forest, Baroness Minirva's Forest.

Top 6 Alliances: Yorick - 46739, Crimson Brigade - 40727, Cheery Wafflers - 39645, Zions Fury - 24198, Black Letter Society - 23473, Corsairs - 11953
*****************************************

Our (ig)noble alliance got a mention, but it goes to show it's not what you know but who you sleep with (as Angus can probably attest to given his special mention as brown-noser of the year)!

oh appropriate time to express some anger here I guess....

*picks up a car and heaves it across the thread then punches some walls, causing major building destruction, then yells at some old lady. Also takes the TNT out of Kitty's mouth, loosing some fingers in the process*

btw, when I called you dear collegues...I lied.

KittyWere you followed? We can't let some stranger like an Aussie find us here, recreating the campfire scene from "Blazing Saddles". Of course, nobody is stranger than Finns, which we've had in abundance in the past. I hope Keke is doing okay; haven't seen him lately. I guess Prinz Eugen is back at his university, after a summer carrying mail. What did that third Finn maggot go by, Paddington or something? I guess they're all hibernating with the reindeer and the polar bears.  :D :D

Becket, do you expect some changes in the next round of Fiefdom? Unless there are some limits placed on the size of alliances and individual fiefs, I'd expect the same crowd to win again and again and again. Another change I would make is limiting an alliance to one attack on a specific fief per turn. Also, no attacks allowed within an alliance (to rack up battle points). More suggestions available upon request. :D :D

Axe, you should not be losing your heat in a brand new home. Did you contact your contractor? I'm glad you got it back on before freezing overnight.

Becket, I'll post suggestions over there on the Fiefdom site. I've got to find the link again; I seem to have deleted it. Luckily I know it's somewhere in this thread. I've always liked Civilization and its copycats. I think Fiefdom has the basis for a great on-line game, but it definitely needs some tweaks to reduce the power of the big blocs. Basically I don't think there's enough emphasis placed on self-interest. For example, Mace allowing Kitty to use his fief. What are the chances of that ever happening in medieval times? Probably the best known example was Richard letting his brother John run his kingdom. That certainly didn't work out well for Richard, or for the power of the future rulers of England.

Anyway, I gave Berli the Fiefdom link and he said he'd check it out when the new game starts.

Kitty, you're the only one I knew who had used another fief. I apologize for singling you out. :( Maybe instead of using another player's fief, some members set themselves up with several fiefs. I suspect there was a lot of that going on within the big alliances. Please accept my most humble apology. redface.gif redface.gif :( :(

Anyway, I have posted 10 suggestions at the Fiefdom forum, so let me know what you think. I suspect i won't be invited back, because too many people just want to raise massive armies and spend all of their time fighting.

Whoa, three whole posts (okay, four now with Boo's words of wisdom) on this thread today. Careful you all, with this massive volume we'll burn out a circuit in the server. I'm sure all of you were preoccupied this afternoon watching the mighty Colts flatten the Chiefs! Who's next, the Patriots? GRARGHRARGHRARGHRAGHRAGH!! That's Axe's and MasterGoodale's local team! Go Colts! Murder those New England bums! :D :D :D

Becket, any more Fiefdom on the horizon? I haven't been back to the forum since I posted my message. Have I been burned in effigy yet? Calm down Snarker, you maggot, you can't actually set me on fire in Inferno. tongue.gif tongue.gif

Speaking of inferno, a city block of my home town is on fire right now. Becky and I had to drive downtown to see, because the street corner mentioned by the TV news is the very corner she has a cafe located on. Fortunately the fire is across the street from her business, and also downwind. Sadly, all of the buildings being destroyed are at least 100 years old. One was an old JC Penneys store built in the 1890s which was recently completely refurbished into a gorgeous facility for wedding receptions and other events. I was there last weekend, and it's hard to believe that now it's a smoking ruin. :( :(

Can I get a discount on coffee if I show up and mention your name? I love good coffee and Paula's a tea granny at the ripe age of 30. Actually, I'm having a tea as I type this).

It's always sad to see historic buildings go down, either to fire or the demolition ball. In Toronto a businessman tried to build a new Porsche dealership on top of the foundations of one of the earliest Legislatures in Canada when Toronto was known as Fort York. After much dilly-dallying the government finally stepped in to save the landmark.
They were the buildings you American hooligans burned in the War of 1812 for which we, in retaliation, burned the White House down.

http://schools.tdsb.on.ca/jarvisci/toronto/parl1797.jpg

You nut jobs also burned Newark (now known as Niagara-on-the-Lake) which was the original seat of government in Upper Canada. For that one we burned Buffalo to the ground. Unfortunately, Buffalo rebuilt.

Here's a picture of Fort George (in Newark) from the American Fort Niagara across the river.

Dave H

The address of the facility that burned was 300 Spring Street. You can see what it looked like before tonight by looking at the web site here (http://www.300spring.com). It's easy to forget when we casually destroy buildings in CM that almost every building is someone's pride and joy. One weird twist is that one of the two owners of 300 Spring is a Jeffersonville fireman, so imagine his state of mind. :( :( :(

Axe, Becky's Cafe Chardeau is only open for lunch on weekdays. They share space in the building (another old one) with a coffee shop, so I can't help you out there. However, even if you turn up at the cafe on a weekday, don't expect to see me. I usually eat lunch at Becky's catering kitchen, which is a couple of blocks away. Her catering website is here (http://www.chardeaus.com). Eating catered food for lunch every day is a tough job, but somebody's got to do it! :D :D :D

Hey, what's a few towns and cities between friends, eh? Maggot. Every 'Mercan school kid knows the War of 1812 started when the English burned Washington (even though he was dead for ages) and God stopped the heathens with a freak tornado. And it was also about some guys who sing:

"in 1814 we took a little trip along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip" ..."We fired our cannon till the barrel melted down, then we grabbed an alligator & we fought another round. We filled his head with cannon balls, & powered his behind 'n when we touched the powder off the gator lost his mind."

Those are some angry, demented, just plain weird lyrics by Johnny Horton, maggots. Those are Waffle lyrics, none of those penguin ninny lyrics.

ps Like we had designs on Canada... we were trying to burn Newark, NJ and got a little lost.

Soddball, I like this version of Inferno much better than the CMBB scenario. I can't say for sure why; maybe the map seems more open. Whatever the reason, Snarker and I have many, many fires going.

Whatever happened to mike_the_wino? Has he stopped playing Combat Mission? Is he at the Betty Ford Clinic? The maggot challenged me to a PBEM (we're using the BDLRM scenario, with him defending); then he disappeared when he discovered how useless his weapons were. GRRRRRRR!!!

How about Mike/Stalin's Organ? I know he was taking a two week vacation, but I thought that was over the holidays. I've got his Kiwis right where I want them in a PBEM  , but I can't finish him off with no turns.

Quick question for Boo, Kitty, YK2, Mace, and our other guest penguins. Has something happened to the Peng thread to cause you to spend more time here in the land of Cheery Waffles? A couple of us were just curious about why you are spending time here instead of in your old stomping ground. I thought it was to escape the Aussies, but Mace showing up ruined that theory. We figured maybe it was from the welcome you received here. Then we thought it was to escape Seanachai and his long-winded posts. So is there any particular reason, or just kismet? :D :D Whatever the reason, it's a pleasure to have you with us. But do try to keep the hairballs to a minimum. :D

ADDRESS TO A MAGGOT:

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like hot molten TNT.

An' cut you up wi' ready slight
Trenching your gushing entrails bright

You blunder about in your sad little lives, your tiny minds blind to the glories that surround you.
(That would be us, for you slightly more dense than usual individuals.)
If it weren't for us propping up this nasty little place, it would have sunk to the bottom of the last page long ago.
But you never see and perhaps that's how it must be...

Lest we forget the land of CMBB, I just started up "Clash of Titans II" with a friend in PBEM. All of those IS-3s, IS-2s, and T-44s are quite a sight. Now, if only they didn't suck. I'd trade them all for their point value in T-34/85s. As it is, I expect to have my clock cleaned by all the uber-German armor when my IS tanks simply refuse to engage.

So what's up with the Axeman?

Is he having to really work for a living these days?

Another provincial election?
A postal strike?
A moose stuck in a ditch?

Where is our ace reporter?

My updates, for what they're worth, considering that you are all bus-shagging nonces.

Jim Boggs and I have come to the conclusion that if we want an insane knife-fight with short visibility and ridiculous equipment selections, we'll pick Inferno and not Ambush! in future. My professional verdict gives it 1 AARHGAHRARHGARAHRGHA!!!! out of 5. Still, you live and learn.

Dave H pimps around on our playtest like a bloke who can't remember the horrors of bocage knife-fights from CM:BO. Still, it's only turn 2 so I might let him off.

Keke has resurfaced! Our game will continue apace.

Snarker is playing the Doctor Luck game with his creeping Panzer III and is on the explody end of some more 25pdrs.

Becket thinks he has run into some Tigers of mine. I refuse to offer him the consolation of discovering that they are only Mark IVs since he is having too much fun watching his Shermans brew up.

Seanachai sends no stinking turns at all! He's a whining girl! I demand satisfaction! I demand tea and biscuits! AHHRAHGRAHGAHGARHARHGRAHARHARAR!!! I want to stuff my British Bayonets into the fat bellies of his slithering krauts! I want to slather him in red-hot, flaming, bitter, furious molten TNT!!

RARARARARRRGHGHGHGHHARRAAR!!!!!

Turns out this morning to all maggots I'm currently engaged in combat with

The complete lack of frothing TNT bubbling in my inbox leads me to believe you're all big nancy boys

So I'm off to bed with a nice, hot cup of cocoa and a copy of Cosmopolitan magazine

Teddy

Edited to add: Soddball, you gibbering buffoon, our CMBB battles have left me with deep scars of doubt and self-loathing. How about a rematch in CMAK, as long as it's not Ambush!?
