In and of itself, Aachen was not of great military
significance. However, Aachen was the first city in
Germany threatened by the Allies and the Germans
found it impossible to surrender it without a fight.

The city’s defense rested in the hands of Col.
Gerhard Wilck, the commander of the 264th Volks
Grenadier Division. Hitler took a personal interest in
the battle and ordered a fanatical, house-to-house
“last stand”. Evacuation was out of the question,
and the German high command told Wilck that he
was to hold the city”...to the last man and,...if
necessary, allow himself to be buried under the
ruins.”

Already having suffered heavy casualties east of
Aachen and fighting along an extended front, the [U.S.]
1st Infantry Division found it almost impossible to mass
adequate forces against the city. Only one regiment,
the 26th, was available and it was short one of its
three battalions, but the regimental commander
decided to put all of his combat power forward and
not hold back any reserves. The 26th Infantry would
attack through the city from east to west with both
battalions abreast. While the 3rd battalion on the
right would sweep through the industrial parks and
seize the higher ground on the city’s north side, the
2d battalion, commanded by Lt. Col. Derrill M. Daniel,
would conduct the main attack on the left through
Aachen’s urban center.

The battalion adopted an aggressive motto-”Knock
‘em all down”-that captured both the spirit and the
method the soldiers would use in the battle for
Aachen.

Foret de St. Sever (Historical)

August 4, 1944

Advance Operation - 3 battles (15 turns)

The Allies are breaking out in France.
The Germans have their backs to the
wall. They must stop the enemy or die.

We all know about the Normandy landings,
Operations Goodwood and Cobra, the
Argentan-Falaise Pocket, all fought
for the liberation of France.

Here is a scenario based on a fierce
small unit action that was not part of
the bigger operations listed above,
but was one of the many firefights
fought during the war that were
important but not seen as historically
significant.

Design note:

This Operation is based on a story from
April 2001 issue of Military Heritage
magazine, "Roadblock at St. Sever", by
George J. Winter (pp 34-41).

Scenario design: Michael "Gonzo" Gonzalez
Briefing Editor: Chris Sabin
