Instead of splattering it all over the place, better have it centralized.
Fixes for bad performance on multi-core machines include:
1) Microsoft ACPI patch - stop trying to power down individual cores in multi-core CPUs:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256/en-us
2) AMD - stop Windows from messing with the clocks and always use the same clock in the same core:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html
3) You can also try to set the affinity of the game to one CPU, so that it runs on that CPU only

http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid1_gci778853,00.html
4) Most BIOSes allow you to disable multi-core. While you probably do want to do that permanently, it would still be useful to know whether it fixes the issue.

Actually here's an even more complete list of the options:

Tried turing off core 1 affinity by alt-tabbing out. No luck, no change at all in performance.

Crashes and freezes so far seem to be in the ATI zone. You need to mention the hardware you have when asking for help.

Please note that the Microsoft patch does downalod automatically via Microsoft's notification of updates feature. Therefore, if you haven't manually download and installed this patch then you should try it. This fixes most people's problems, especially those with ATI cards and various types of dual processor chips.
If this does not help you, please list your system specs here. Specifically we want to know the following:
CPU Type/Speed
Video Card Brand/Model
Specific type of OS (Vista 32, Vist 64, etc.)
We'll get to the bottom of this, but first we have to figure out what combination of things is common to you guys.
Thanks!

OK a little more detail regarding the lock ups and crash. First I have a ATI x850 series video card with the latest catylist drivers. I have a dual core system running Vista Home, full install. 2 gigs of Ram Basically everything on the recommended side of CM-SF. Regardless, the game doesn't run.
I and others seem to be having the same problem with vista dual core ATI setups. so hopefully ther will be some kind of fix in the very near future regarding the ATI card problem.

just a note, CM-TOW runs great on my system.

Just loaded up the demo... running AMD X2 3800+, nvidia 7600GT, XP 1gig RAM, experiencing all kind of weird problems (sound issues, visual artifacts, etc.), installed the above fixes... runs like a dream. Thanks! Leaves me scramblin' for the credit card.
