View Full Version : The All New Newbie Tournament: Fellowship of the Newbie
Cpl Carrot

No new players are required. The winners have just about been decided
Ok, so my week starts early :D
Here are the rules
==================================================
This tournament is for newbies only. What is a newbie? Well a newbie is considered (in my book) to be a person with either little or no experience with multi-player gaming and/or inexperienced in the joys that is Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. If you fit this criteria then feel free to join in the fun. If you are unsure, ask me.
Players will be put into groups of 16 with 4 backups. They will then be paired off against someone of their own level and will play two battles. The combined sum of these results will determine the winner of the pairing and that person will advance.
If by some freak of nature there is a tie, then a third battle will be played and the winner will advance. If this is then a tie then I will start tearing out my hair and eating my shirt. The losing player of each battle will email me and tell me the score along with their final file and password. In case of a tie, then both email me.
Players can either play by PBEM and or TCP/IP. You will have plenty of time to complete the battles using PBEM only. No one is going to be forced to play via TCP/IP. However you should look to play at least one email per day. Real life has a bad habit of springing surprises so if you are ahead of schedule then the better we can all cope. If for some reason you are going to unable to play for a day or so then let myself and your opponent know as soon as you can. If you must drop out please let your opponent know along with me.
No abuse, trash-talking etc will be tolerated. Even in jest this can taken the wrong way and spoil the experience for the other player. If you can't be nice – don't play. Simple as that.
The esteemed Panzerman and Company at the CM Scenario Zone will be making the maps. They will be the best they can make and will be VERY fair to each side.
After Action Reports (AAR's) are not required, however they will be welcome. If you included pictures make sure you make them small otherwise I am not going to be happy (and you don't want that). The final battle between the last two players WILL however require a detailed blow by blow AAR.
Prizes are as yet unknown. It maybe an honorary generalship into the mighty Redsylvanian Army or the bestowing of the rank of Squire in the Peng Challenge thread. Or it could be something much, much worse ;)
==================================================
Thats all for now. More to follow

Personal preferences: I´d like to choose to my forces within not too restricting limits. (I like fortifications, for example, and doing away with them I´d find fun reducing.)

Can you clarify something for me? You mention the maps, but not the forces. Will this be a set of scenarios with forces determined by someone else, or a u-pick free for all?
And if it's a pick your own situation, will any particular set of "Rules" be enforced?
And most important, have six PBEM games cost me my cherished status of Newbie? If not, how many PBEM games does it take to become an Oldie? tongue.gif
Enquiring minds (well, one mind anyway) want to know.

AS and Dave,
The Scenario Zone team will be designing the scenarios, so special orders will not be accepted. Sorry. smile.gif

But my other question remains, how new is a Newbie? If I consistently lose PBEMs, do I ever stop being a Newbie? For that matter, why would I ever want to stop being a Newbie? Obviously with a Member number over 5000 I'll never be an "Old One" (thank you, God!). :D

Dave,
Actually, my reflexes got the better of me. Panzerman and the team at The Scenario Zone are doing the scenarios, not B&T. The parameters will be the same as what I used for the first Newbie tournament, and I am sure the boys will do great work.
As far as defining a Nebie goes, that is Cpl Carrot's call. When he wakes for the day, I am sure he can explain that in detail.
Psycho maps?! :D

In order to define a newbie I look at the responses people gave to questions about CM & PBEM experience. From this I will pool together people of about the grasp of things and continue from there. When enrolment closes (a couple of weeks from now probably) I will post who is in what pool and ask for submissions if people are not happy with their group. (Please be resonable ;) )
If I do not think people are eligible (ie if Fionn shows up) they will receive a message from me saying so and why.
AS and Dave H - I have your submissions and am working on getting a response to you, but you are in
As for the maps, Panzerman and co are working away to produce the fairest and bestest maps they can so rest assured that no one will have an unfair advantage.

I much prefer a realistic scenario to a wild free for all. I also don't mind unbalanced scenarios.
Actually the issue of "balance" has been one of my pet peeves about wargaming for several decades. Throughout history there have been very, very few "balanced" wars, or battles, or skirmishes. Invariably one side has some advantage over the opposition. Many times each side has both advantages and disadvantages. Tactics is how you maximize your advantages and minimize your disadvantages.
So bring on the scenarios, with the possibility of running into anything. And ask SuperTed if he doesn't remember his scenario with the snow and the shaken old timers. Oh, that was one whole platoon of shaken old timers in the set-up! :D

Even in real life, over time, a commander would probably drift toward the kind of force he is comfortable with.

As Panzerman said, the battles seem to be coming along and will hopefully be ready for a kick off on the 10th of June. As someone probably said "Good things take time". ;)
There is still space for people to join. If you are not sure if you qualify as a newbie email me and ask. I'll soon let you know.
Enrollment will close on 3 days before the start of the tourny (so around the 7th fingers crossed)
During these three days I will be emailing you to confirm your opponents and that I have your correct email address. The opponent list will also be posted here.

hey panzerman,
i have a question or two if you can answer without giving away any battle intelligence.
can you give us an idea points wise about how big these battles might be.
1000/1500, 1500/2000 ?
will the battles get larger as we move forward or stay the same size.
it might give us an idea of the time we'll need to
devote to the tourny. my tourny battles will take priority but i have 8 other pbems going (learn by doing)and i can start playing smaller battles the next time around with my other opponents to give more time to the tourny if need be.
this is my first tourny so if these are stupid questions just say so. i'm easy.
while i'm here i want to thank you and cpl carrot for running this tourny. i've run a few sports pools and i know it takes alot of time and can be very daunting at times.

I can tell you this much, that as the tournament goes on the battles, will get larger, and harder. They will start off with simple attack, meeting and defence scenarios, around company sized. Then as you move from round to round they will get a little bigger, and harder. We are trying to let newbies see and learn to use as many elements of CM as possible, like weather, ground conditions etc. While using historically realistic forces. That's all I will say for now.

Cpl. Carrot,
A quick question before we get going.
Will we be using the game-generated raw scores only, or will you be using some variation like the Nabla system they're using in the RoW tournament?
I bring this up because in the original Newbie Tournament the issue of "unbalanced scenarios" reared its ugly head. SuperTed had to do some adjusting of scores in at least one scenario (if I remember correctly, he divided both player's scores by 2).
I personally have no preference one way or the other. So before this comes up, can we get an official ruling now?
Thanks.
Cpl Carrot

All:
The scenarios are balanced. Therefore, I will be using the raw scores. You will be fighting two battles each and the player with the highest combined score goes through.

Battles have been sent out to the Riders of Rohan . You should have one battle as Axis and the other as Allied.
However can Hades please contact me ASAP as your hotmail account was not accessable. Packman , as this is your opponent, you had better hold fire until I either hear from him (or you do) or I find you a new opponent. Hades, you will have until Saturday evening (My time).
OK everyone else in Riders of Rohan best of luck. Please use the passwords I have supplied, you will be needing them in your future battles so don't tell anyone.
I do not have set an end date yet, but assume it is tomorrow :D
If you have any questions feel free to email me, however, please, please, please check to see that it is not answered somewhere in this thread.
That is all
Cpl Carrot
Hmmm. Guess that is not all. The second group should get their battles tonight or tomorrow and the third after that.
Oh in case you are wondering my time is GMT+12

Update: Battles for the second group are out, third are about to be sent.
I guess I should have been clearer earlier. I have sent both battles to the first player in the group. When they start each battle they will be automatically assigned a side as the battles are Tourny saved. You should have one Axis and one Allied.
PK please email me. I need to clear something up.

Ok I'm closing down the enrolments. I have eight or nine reserves which should be enough. If not then I will open things up again.
The end date for the battles has been set. It will be 2359 31 July 2002 my time. This should give every one plenty of time to get their battles done. Valid reasons may yield extensions (things like the dog ate my computer etc)

Relax, it's just that there's only 1 company(country side) providing ADSL connections(and I hate 56kb modems smile.gif ) which basically means that it has monopoly, which sucks bacause, they don't have to compete and can have lot worse services (servers down at night time etc.)

SleeStac Please email me urgently. Your partner has not heard from you and we need to know if you are still playing. If I don't hear from you by Friday night, I will have to withdraw from the tourny and give your place to the next reserve Joe F
In related matters, if any one has not yet heard from their partner let me know IMMEDIATELY. As in now.
Since everyone else seems to be nearly finished ( :D :D ) here is what you do with the final results. The loser of each battle is to email me the result PLUS the final turn.
Now some of you have asked about AAR's. These will be welcome by Panzerman and Co however they are not compulsary yet. If you do write one, keep any pictures small an in .jpg format. Otherwise my ISP will have fits. smile.gif

Speaking of vanishing without a trace, I need a brave soul to assume a combat command in a very tough section of the RoW II: Boots & Tracks Brawl Tourney. This volunteer would be able to start from scratch. IOW, none of the games have been started yet.
If any of you Newbies have the time to take on five more PBEM games, and want a real challenge, I have what you're looking for. Email me at mikeman@cablelynx.com for details and/or check the first page of the current RoW II thread. Most everything you might want to know is posted there. When I returned I had an email from him with his first turn and one from you asking where I went...

Cpl CarrotDon't know if you consider this good news, but it is information anyway. I really, really HATE bocage!! The two battlefields have plenty of the disgusting stuff. I think it was plenty gamey of the Allies to invade in France (not to mention the Germans who actually defended themselves in France) and force us gamers to deal with this uniquely aggravating terrain feature.
Can't BTS/BFC fix this and let us play out the Normandy campaign in flat, open country (like the movie "Battle of the Bulge" did for the Ardennes forests)? It would sure simplify things a lot. :D
PanzerBoy

Well I have some good news and some bad news. I guess you will be wanting the good news first so here goes:
The current standings for the groups are now on the web. Go HERE (http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~rjb109/) to view it in all its glory. Please bear in mind that it is a work in progress as I can only read so fast :D Please check that the scores are correct for your battles (for those who have finished)
Now the bad news: The end date for the first round has been pushed back until the 10 August to cater for the slow pokes :D and some unforseen problems.
Now some of you may have picked up that there are only 7 pairings in the Riders of the Mark group. Well to compensate the highest scoring loser from that group will also go through to make up the numbers. Nice arn't I? :D

How many of you guys are working on AARs?
I have two AARs done, but I'd prefer seeing anonymous ones. And we should wait until everyone is done, too. Oh, just a month to sit on my thumbs here....
What do you mean by anonymous?
I've got part of one finished.
I mean Carrot can post them without the writer's name, so that any sneak can't find hints as to a future opponent's style if he reads an AAR.

Have no fear. (Well some is good). No AAR will be posted until all battles are complete. As for ananamous I will think on it but probably not. Two battles is not enough (IMHO) to understand someones playing style.

We have finished the "Snow Warriors" with Former Jarhead at turn 22. Autosurrender saved his last Germans from complete annihilation.
In the "Stand of the Strong" we still have 3 turns left, but I hope the situation in the battle will not change much from now.
Great game, wonderful battles and a worthy opponent! I guess that'll sum it up for us.

Good news and lots of bad news folks.
Good news first. Many people have finished their games and are chomping at the bit to continue. Well done
Bad news now. (1) the end date has been pushed back until the 20th August to allow serveral slow pokes to finish up their battles. This is the final extension I assure you.
(2) I have been either sick (flu) or run off my feet to update the website. I hope (fingers, toes, eyes etc crossed) to be able to update it this week end

If anyone has any AAR's feel free to send them to me and I will host them for viewing.
PLEASE check that I have your correct scores entered into the website as this is what I will be going on when I organise the next round.
You will note that two sections are rather short on numbers. In order to make up the numbers again I will be taking the the hightest scoring losers and some other nice people and using them. (Make sense?)
If something is wrong email immediately as once I send out the battles it will be too late.

Ok here are the pairings as the scores stand:
Riders of the Mark
Shades vs Joe Cz
Lurker vs Packman
Japper vs Munter
And a surprise
GWDWD vs Rhudat
The Uruk-Hai
DL vs Ace Pilot
PK vs SkeeterBee
Letar vs SpaceHamster
Alan vs Alsatian
Ranger of the North
Killgore vs Stormin Norman
Sgt Shultz vs Webs
Len vs Panzerboy
Woffers vs Yarmaluk
Now these are not all set in stone - you have until Manday to dispute the scores (bear in mind it is Friday night now)

I have learned some lessons from round one, and I believe I have identified the bits of the game I need to work on.
1. My infantry tactics need a little work.
2. My artillery tactics need a little work.
3. My armor tactics need a little work.
4. My combined arms tactics need a little work.
Other than those four minor flaws my game is excellent, so watch out.

Alan and I are on turn 28 in both scenarios. I'm guessing we're on pace to finish within the week. Both Sword Point and Troubling Times are too close to call.
Me and Schultz are on turn 27 of Troubling Times and around turn 22 of Sword Point.
Without revealing anything, I want to know: is there anyone playing the Brits in Sword Point who hasn't been mashed to bits?
Alsatain hasn't been mashed yet. He pulled a pretty good stunt to get across the bridge.
I screwed up in TT, on turn 24 I realized it is only a 30 turn game.
Despite what he said above Alsatain is in firm control of all but one of the VLs. He has made much better use of his reinforcements in Sword Point.

Munter and me had quite a slow start. We're on turn 13 in TT and 14 in SP. But really catching up now by sending multiple turns a day.

DL and I finished Times. We are on turn 29 of Sword Point, and yes, I would agree that it doesn’t look good for my poor Brits.
Just curious – did everyone get Axis in one scenario and Allies in the other? I just noticed such a set up makes a player either a defender in both scenarios or an attacker in both scenarios.
Cpl Carrot
10-15-2002, 08:57 PM
My intention was to have people play one game each using axis and allied equipment. I do not look at the battles much (plan to play them blind with people). Since the battles are balanced, it should not matter whether you are defending or attacking. That being said, if anyone feels unfairly treated then let me know.

Panzerboy and I are on turn26 of Troubling Times and turn25 of Sword Point.
Len
Schultz and I just finished Troubling Times and we're on turn 24 or so of Sword Point. I won Troubling Times as Germans, but for some reason, the game did not ward me my rear objective flag. I had no troops camping there, but it was clearly within my control. I think that cost me 15 points or so. Oh, well.
SkeeterBee
10-22-2002, 12:59 PM
PK and I finished both scenerios a couple of weeks ago. I just squeaked by him in the points totals. I played the Germans in Troubling Times and held him at the crossroads and the Brits in Sword Point. I held him off long enough in SP that he ran out of turns, but if he'd had a couple more he would've rolled right through me. By the way, I only lost one vehicle on the bridge. smile.gif

Alan and I just finished are scenarios. Axis Minor Victory in Troubling Times, and Allied Minor Victory in Sword Point.
I really enjoyed the premise, map, and forces in Sword Point. I thought Troubling Times was too straight forward; at least in that it didn't offer the German player much by way of strategic choices.
Looking forward to hearing some AARs.
I don't think Sword Point was close to an Allied Minor Victory. I only had one unit left that was useful and no flags. I was soundly beaten. I didn't have a good plan on what to do once Alsatian made it across the bridge. Once that happened I never had a chance.
Alsatain hasn't been mashed yet. He pulled a pretty good stunt to get across the bridge I can't wait to hear what the "stunt" was.
I (mostly) managed in a straightforward way.

Sgt. Schultz and I finished Troubling and are still in the middle of Sword. Sword is slow because I had to take some real-life travel days and his computer is on the fritz and in the shop.
I won Troubling, but I don't remember the exact score - something like 54-38. I have it at home (I'm away until Sunday).
Aside from my occasional whining about the Sword Point scenario (from the Allied point of view), we're having fun. smile.gif
