Default What's the likelihood of simulating the affects of machine gun crossfire

Boardgames like Advanced Squad Leader have rules to simulate crossfire from machine guns. Since machine guns can only target one opposing unit at a time in CM there doesn't appear to be anyway to simulate the affects of crossfires. This is a often used tactic in actual battlefield conditions, any idea if this is simulated in CMx2?

I believe the more common term for what you are describing is "penetrating fire" in ASL, isn't it?

You'd probably be better off asking this in the CMx2 forums, but the short answer, as far as I know, is no. Although if you were given the right terrain you could probably do some stuff with the target light order.

Incoming from the rear works wonders on morale. IIRC fire from several angles is bad for morale, too. But I think casualties are calculated per firer, so no direct effects from crossfire.

jaeger8888,

While grazing fire, cover busting ability of the Ma Deuce, Vickers sustained fire and other MG issues aren't modeled in CMAK, I can assure you that crossfires are deadly, having been shredded by them repeatedly in RoW IV, and from considerable range at that. Units are least affected by fire from the front, significantly affected by fire from the flank and positively unhinged by fire from the rear. Therefore, fire from both flanks is very bad news. If you also have CMBO, you can set up an identical set of firefights for CMBO and CMAK, a process which will reveal how much nastier MGs became from the first CM game to the successor games CMBB and CMAK. Tactics which worked before in CMBO in the face of multiple MGs will prove disastrous when confronted with the greater MG suppressive effects, increased vulnerability of running troops, not to mention intensive fire by the MGs when the assaulting infantry gets close. Call Sgt. Rock style position storming of CMBO days suicidal in CMBB and CMAK!

Regards,

John Kettler

jaeger8888,

Sorry--missed the key CMx2 reference and answered the wrong question! Suggest you ask this on the CMSF Forum.

Regards,

John Kettler
