Campaign Details Liberation of Belorussia CampaignSix new original missions representing the Vitebsk-Orsha Offensive dated June 23-28, 1944. The offensive of the 1st Baltic and the 3rd Belorussian Fronts carried out on June 23-28 as a part of the Belorussian Strategic Offensive in 1944. Its goal was to destroy the left wing of the German Army Group Centre on the Vitebsk-Lepel and Orsha lines of advance. Taking advantage of the marshy-wooded terrain as well as numerous rivers with wide swampy floodplains, German troops created the Panther defensive line 20-45 kilometers deep. The main attack of the 1st Baltic Front on the Lepel line of advance was to destroy enemy forces of the Vitebsk-Lepel area with the troops of the 3rd Belorussian Front. Then they were to force a crossing of the Western Dvina river and secure the Lepel and Chashniki areas. The 3rd Belorussian Front was to strike two blows: one at Bogushevsk, Senno-Vitebsk and another at Borisov and Orsha to destroy enemy forces in Orsha and gain access to the Berezina river. In the morning of June 23, after the artillery preparation, the Fronts launched the offensive.
During the very first day, enemy’s defenses to the northwest and south of Vitebsk were penetrated 10-16 kilometers deep. Further developing the offensive, the troops of the 43rd and 39th Armies liberated Vitebsk on June 26, having encircled and cleaved in two five divisions of the Third Panzer Army. During this offensive the enemy lost 20000 killed, 10000 captured and also lost a lot of military hardware. This created a wide gap in the German defenses. In the morning of June 26 in the 5th Army battle zone, the deep penetration forces of the 5th Guards Tank Army started to advance to Tolochin and Borisov, thus adding to the encirclement of Nazis in Orsha. On June 27, Soviet forces liberated Orsha. Continuing the offensive, by June 28 the 1st Baltic Front reached the line 30 kilometers southeast of Polotsk and Lepel, while the 3rd Belorussian Front reached the Berezina river to the north of Borisov.
During this operation, both Fronts cooperated with Belorussian guerillas. After the Vitebsk-Orsha Offensive, the left wing of the Army Group Centre was destroyed. Soviet forces advanced 80-150 kilometers, creating favourable conditions for further encirclement and destruction of German forces by Minsk. The French army keeps losing battles. The attempts by the French high command to seal off the breach in the defensive line are useless. The line is falling apart, and high command decides to arrange a headlong retreat to the south. Some of the French units are surrounded before they can retreat and have to fight all the way to reach their own forces. Trapped
The French army keeps losing battles. After the unsuccessful counterattack at Arras and the evacuation of British and part of French troops, the outcome of the battle of France is decided. On June, 5 German troops begin their attack in the sector Laon – Abbeville. The French high command attempts to seal off the breach in the defensive line but it’s a futile effort. Their defense is falling apart, and high command decides to arrange a headlong retreat to the south. Breakthrough On June 10, Italy declares war against Great Britain and France. Italian troops invade the southern regions of France. On the same day, the French government is evacuated from Paris. The final battle
Paris fell on June 14. Some French military units and garrisons are still offering an organized resistance. Although the Italian attack in the Alps has been stopped, the entire Northern part of France and the whole ocean coast line were occupied.
