Allied turn, 28th October 1943

The failure of the US paratroopers hurts.  But Allied Command still approves moving forward.  Australians, a US tank, and HQ to land on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, taking the port city of Davao!  The stream of transports coming from America hopes to establish a stronghold in the Philippines from where we can branch out to attack other Japanese possessions.  It may not seem like a major coup, but establishing a foothold in the Philippines was a major morale boost.  The situation in China has everyone concerned, and some good news certainly helps.

More good news as the USMC also land on Palau, taking Babelthuap. Marine pilots shaking their heads at their old P-38 Lightnings all give a loud 'Huzzah' when 2 squadrons of beautiful shiny new gull-wing Corsairs arrive!

Japanese turn, 25th June 1942

Changsha is burning and China is under pressure. More Japanese units arrive at the border of Thailand and Burma and the fighting goes on, and we are slowly starting to get the upper hand.

Allied turn, 5th July 1942

There is a strange feeling in the air in the Dutch East Indies, as people are wondering whether Japanese transports will be looming over the horizon at any minute, spilling hundreds of Japanese soldiers out onto the beaches, and dealing forthwith with the small Dutch garrison. There have been numerous false alarms already, and these are starting to affect morale so the sooner the Japanese come and we get to fight them, the better.

Operation Z is the scenario that covers the whole of the war in the Pacific, from Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor through four long years of gruelling struggle over thousands of miles of ocean as the allies fought back and brought Japan to her knees. Let's see how we get on!

On the 7th August 1942 the 1st Marine division landed on Guadalcanal and Tulagi to capture Japanese airfields before they could be completed. Task Force 62 was sent to deliver and support the invasion. Japanese units on Tulagi resisted strongly to start with but were soon crushed. On Guadalcanal there was little resistance at first. TF62 divided itself up into three flotillas and guarded the entrances to Ironbottom Sound (as it would soon be known) to protect the US troops from Japanese shore bombardment. The following excerpts are taken from radio communications from the key US military personnel involved as we follow the progress of the invasion.

This is a short AAR of one of the smaller campaigns in the upcoming Strategic Command WW2 Pacific Theater game, by Robert Carver.

1944 - 45 Philippines AAR

The game starts with the American 7th Fleet, with it's smaller carriers and older battleships, and the Army invasion force off the coast of Leyte.  The 3rd Fleet, with it's big carriers and fast battleships, have sailed north upon sighting (what the USN thinks) is the Imperial Japanese Navy's main force.  South of Leyte a second Japanese force is sighted and the USN's old battleships are positioned to meet them.  But, to the north of Leyte, just off Samar Island is a third Japanese force, and this group is unseen.
