After several revolutions, a World war, and a civil war, the country was in a sad state and the new Soviet government could not even think about building an ocean fleet. The only real solution was to create a mosquito fleet that would be able to protect the sea borders.

The history of World War I British torpedo boats had started in 1915 with a joint report by Lieutenants Hampden, Bremner and Anson from Harwich Striking Force. These officers suggested providing the Royal Navy cruisers with light torpedo boats that could be lowered on water and lifted back on board via standard davits. The cruisers would deliver such torpedo boats to the mine field border at Heligoland Bay. The boats would then be lowered and, thanks to their low draft, will be able to navigate above the mines and attack Cuxhaven, Wilhelmshafen and Helgoland roads.

The ancestors of the new generation of PT boats, which came in the stead of steam traveling boats of the late 19th century, were sports boats equipped with internal combustion engines, and so it seems logical to begin our story with the year of 1902. It was then that several new corporations were founded - the English "Marine Motor Association", the American "American Power Boat Association", the French "Automobile Club de France" and the German "Deutsche Automobilclub". In 1903, the Englishman Alfred Harmsworth organized an annual international contest, the "British International Trophy", with the awarded prize - the "Harmsworth Cup". In June 1903, the cup was won by a 40-feet boat, the "Napier-I", equipped with a 65 HP engine - this boat managed to develop speed of 18.9 knots.

The model of the American boat "Dixie-II" that won the "Harmsworth Cup" in 1907 in Monaco. The speed of the winner was 27.5 knots.

Torpedo boat CSS David was designed and built by the privately owned Southern Torpedo Company. The reason behind this initiative coming from a private sector organization was simply a 100,000 confederate dollars award, offered for sinking USS New Ironsides - the US Navy northerner squadron ironclad that was blocking the city of Charleston.

The main features of CSS David were an exceptionally low above-water silhouette and ballast tanks that could be filled with water.

Staring at the heading and the flashing cursor on an empty page for some time while trying to decide what next to write for the Diary, I came to the conclusion that some of the people on the forum are appearing to be very knowledgeable about many simulation aspects, some of which even I do not understand, that they will be easily capable of learning the in-game controls for boats and ships on their own. While the game includes a tutorial and a fully printed manual, I decided to type up a manual focused solely on the in-game controls... and casting a wider scope than what is available in the other documentation.

Both water and air in this game are represented as two viscous media separated by the surface of water. The surface of water corresponds to a conditional plane with two animated altitude maps laid upon its geometrical grid. One of these maps is used to represent the waves, and the other one is used to model the ripples on the surface of water. It activates when the camera approaches the water surface closely.

The game's repair model clearly emphasizes that the crew of a ship is a very valuable resource. On the open sea, the ship is repaired by its crew members - simply because there is no one else around to do the job. When a battle alarm is raised, those crew members not busy with guns and steering the ship form repair teams whose task it is to ensure the ship's survivability and fix any combat damage done to the boat.

When developing PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, we tried to reach the golden mean between realism and interesting gameplay that would bring a lot of fun to the gamers who are fond of simulation and strategy games. The topic of today's' blog is "Damage Modeling". We hope that you will find some hints here making your playing experience more fun!
