There was the initial moment of immobility and shock, and then the whole line of vehicles broke and scattered wildly to the north and north-east. Medium machine-guns kept up continuous pressure and tanks were interspersed with the infantry. There was a smoke-screen to cover the last and most dangerous stretch.
