The MTLB was introduced into the inventory of the Soviet Army in 1964
as a prime-mover for anti-tank artillery and also as a carrier.
The vehicle has the following layout: transmission located in the forward
part with the commanding compartment behind it. The driver sits to the
left in the commanding compartment and the commander to the right. The
engine is located in the middle part of the hull with a passage to the
passenger compartment between it and the right side.
The armed carrier has excellent rugged-terrain performance. Swimming is
achieved by track rotation.
