Notes
|
During the 1950s and 1960s colonial wars in Africa (particularly Algeria) the French used a slightly modified Lizard pattern for their shelter quarters. No other items were made in this pattern, however there are plenty of recently made items on the collectors market. In the late 1990s there was a flood of these shelters onto the market, making them quite cheap material for "fakes".

Notes
|
After much combat experience the French changed the basic TAP 47/xx pattern uniform to a much simplified and lighter version for use Army wide. After 1964 the uniform was officially discontinued due to strong association with the colonial wars it saw service in. However, the Foreign Legion continued to wear the pattern well into the 1980s.
Uniforms in the Mle.58 pattern were produced at least into the 1970s unchanged, though with velcro rank and name tape backings added. I am not sure, but it would appear the uniform ceased to be produced around this time and Legionares either had to make due with existing stocks or have their own customized uniforms made from original material. The custom examples I've seen look like a simplified (i.e. cheaper) Mle.58 pattern. |

Notes
|
Deuget is the current, and only, French desert camo. It was introduced during the Gulf War just before Operation Desert Storm. It can be said that it is the first camouflage worn sicne the pattern Lizard was discontinued, though due to its specialized nature it was not (and is not) intended to be the standard, general issue uniform of the French Armed Forces. The pattern for that role is the closely related Central Europe detailed below.

Notes
|
This is the current French Central Europe pattern used for temperate climates. It is the first general issue camouflage for the French Army since the Lizard pattern. Although introduced just after the Gulf War, it took a number of years for it to be common place amongst French forces. The shapes are similar to the Deuget desert pattern but with a 4th color, black, overlapping the base colors.

This is a sample of commercial F1 Lizard set I picked up a long time ago. I am not sure what the story is with these sets, but they used to be quite easy to get a hold of and not very expensive.
